There are many events happening around the year, the major being Annual Day where primary and pre-primary participate and write a musical play- a Pantomime and also perform the entire play on stage in front of the audience making them stage- friendly and helping them overcome their stage fear. So this play that they perform is almost like a Broadway musical,as we also focus on giving the kids an international perspective. The story usually is written by the seniors, generally children of grade 4th or 5th.SSFI has a partner in drama,Kriya Shakti who help to train children, make them practice perfectly and also improve and polish their skills if need be.
Another event is a Sports Day where the skills of children are tested knowing each child’s potential and helping them pick a sport they can excel in keeping their preference as a priority. Various competitions are held of different sport games giving them a chance to perform and also evaluate their potential and focus on having a healthy competition.
SSFI not only focuses on providing the best in academics but also the best in co-curricular activities that helps in building a child’s personality overall.
Coffee morning is actually like an open day where the children make their learning visible by putting up a presentation and performing in front of parents and other audience. By this, parents also understand the learning philosophy and how the electric environment accommodates the ambitious academic and co-curricular programs and also witness the talents in kids and how they outshine with the best of knowledge they have without any fear of stage or addressing a crowd.
They also have send-off assembly on that particular day where the entire school dances and plays games based on themes and also if a child is ready, he/she can perform on the spot during the assembly any act or dance or play what he/she has learnt. After the assembly the children can go back home,so it is just the kind of Fun day children look for.
Parents are kept well-informed about their child’s progress through these Coffee Mornings and be updated with their child’s weekly progress and be in par with the school in their child’s academic growth.
SSFI practices Fun Fridays- wherein every month’s last Friday the kids choose a theme according to which they explore different concepts, experiment things ,learn new arts/crafts, few themes which children have tried and absolutely loved doing include tie and dye, pot making, making a catapult and so on, which are actually fun and gives them a sense to learn more out of the books and always have a mind for experimenting and learning new things.
The other fun day is The Project Day which is actually a role play day which is done at the end of a certain concept of culmination wherein a child will have a real life experience of it through a role-play kind of set up.
SSFI conducts guest lectures of authors and experts, the children get to learn from their workshop where they are taught to act/ dance or sing.Mr. Orissa Balu,a cultural expert and a great scientist in research scholar, had visited once where in children gained a lot of knowledge from him. Children are also taken for field trips making them learn and experience in a practical setup.
Children are also taken to a place called ‘Bay of Life’ where there are wild sea animals which are non-captured,children are taught how to take care of them and also make them love the beauty of nature. So these are the few of many fun days SSFI offers their children.
Along with the academic curriculum, SSFI gives a lot of importance to Curious Curriculum. Curious Curriculum is a concept in which both knowledge and skills are embedded in application and context. It is based around children’s knowledge, skills, attitude, promoting enquiry and questioning. It encourages them to be active and it teaches them to take responsibility for their learning.
SSFI offers a parallel program to all their students which is free of cost. This program is not exam bound but is integrated with academics. The students of Primary and Pre Primary classes do organic farming every day. This gives the children an opportunity to think freely. The children are exposed to nature and fresh air every day. They learn the importance of eating fresh and pesticide free food. It’s a great way to engage kids in outdoor activities where they can produce food and get exercise all while having some fun.
Primary classes also have design thinking, entrepreneurship and coding. Coding helps children with communication, creativity, math, writing, and confidence. Design thinking is a process for creative problem solving. It is an approach to better learning by helping children, parents and faculty to understand the why’s and how’s of things, leading to deeper learning and research. Teaching entrepreneurial skills to children helps them to think out of the box and nurtures unconventional talents and skills. Every day for 40 minutes primary classes have free thinking classes on problem solving skills, leadership skills, me skills and we skills. Organic farming is done by all students but the children can choose one field out of the above and concentrate on the same.
Pre Primary classes have very interesting STEAM ( Science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics ) activities for children, like Candy making or doll making. SSFI also offers an explorers program, which is based on science.
Each student at SSFI is an asset of the school. Joining a new school can be overwhelming for any student. A student who comes from another school is used to a certain cultural and physical environment. It takes time for the children to get adjusted and settled in a completely new environment. New students go through a lot of different feelings. They can be excited, scared or nervous. They are out of their comfort zone. Children feel very sad when they leave their friends behind and join a new school. Not knowing anyone in a new environment can make them feel isolated. It is very important to be kind and positive to all students in a school. SSFI makes this transition very smooth for all the new students. Great importance is given to social and emotional development of all students. SSFI understands that any new experience can be very intimidating for anyone.
A student buddy is assigned to new students to make this transition a better experience. The student buddy takes the responsibility of answering all the questions of the new students. The student buddy ensures that the new students have all the resources like planner, books, list of school events , etc. He takes the new students around the school campus and shows the different rooms, like art /craft room, sports area, cafeteria, etc. The teachers also check in with the new students frequently to make sure that they are comfortable. At SSFI, it is made sure that a positive relationship is built between teachers and students.
Sports form an integral part of the school curriculum and it helps to prepare students to face the challenges of life. It enhances physical and mental abilities which helps them achieve their goals in life. Sports not only keep children fit but also help in building confidence in them. The daily physical activities help children to remain fit, improve their memory and refresh their minds.
At SSFI, a lot of emphasis is given on physical fitness. Along with extra-curricular activities, sports from an integral part of their curriculum. From the early years itself, it is essential to inculcate competitive skills as well as team spirit and leadership qualities in children. Knowing that they have to lead the team boosts the leadership qualities and this helps them to become good decision makers in life. Learning these skills during sports activities also help the students in various phases of life, like academics or future careers. Students also learn to cooperate with other teammates to win.
SSFI boasts of an excellent Football team which represents the school. The Sports Instructor has an M.Phil degree and is a District Level Football player. Along with football, athletics and gymnastics are given an equal importance. The day to day curriculum at SSFI is designed in such a way that it integrates academics with sports. Physical activities are scheduled to keep students active between the classes, during school hours and even beyond school hours.
SSFI believes that a school is a community, almost like a state in itself. At SSFI everybody comes together and works hand in hand towards empowering the child. Through the journey the faculty and parents become part of the SSFI family by encouraging and supporting each other along the way,
SSFI has strong core values and not only believes in internationalism but also in core Indian values like tolerance, respect, empathy and being responsible for themselves, their surroundings and their peers. This is what guides the idea of community at SSFI.
SSFI is also an inclusive set up. Children growing in the SSFI community are usually socially and emotionally intelligent individuals who embrace and be part of the society.
Very few schools in India emphasise on Social and Emotional intelligence but SSFI understands the importance of this. Some research has shown that kids with high emotional and social intelligence tend to be more engaged in school, have better relationships and get better grades.
The great news is that emotional and social intelligence is not a gift. It’s actually a skill, one that can be taught to children, starting when they’re as young as grade 1.
It’s also something that will prepare them for an ever-changing future. As every change is loaded with emotion, it is emotional intelligence that will likely be the core competence to navigate their future – and the sooner the children learn about it in school, the better. SSFI has always created such a community for their children.
At SSFI the teaching style is guided by pedagogy. The bedrock of the teaching style is driven by inquiry. At SSFI the teachers train the children to ask questions. The focus is on thinking and they strongly believe thinking is learning.
There are various ways they induce this thinking in children.
They believe in introducing a subject to a child through real world problems in a very experiential and skilled manner. They understand at what level of understanding the children are at and guide them to solve a problem.
At SSFI, the teachers pay close attention that all children actively participate and engage in all activities and discussions in the classroom and believe in active learning strategies where they emphasise on allowing the child to ask questions and make sure that the child is able to achieve the learning outcome.
SSFI is accredited to Cambridge International Education which helps SSFI to design a curriculum with flexibility that caters to the local needs. Cambridge Education helps SSFI emphasise a lot on cognitive learning. To apply logic and skill to comprehend a problem begins from grade 1. As a result, the child gets inspired and creates their own ideas and texts and are asked to perform and present it.
When children get the freedom to reflect on their performance, they learn to evaluate what they are good at and where they can improvise and improve not only themselves but their peers as well. This peer assessment and reflection culture is what SSFI encourages.
SSFI has also taken some aspects from the Australian National framework curriculum with respect to Digital, Social and Emotional learning and added that to the Cambridge programme to boost the performances of the students.
The SSFI vision is to strive to nurture skilful, mindful and artistic responsible thinkers. SSFI lays immense importance on art as it feels that art has the capacity to achieve so much and makes a child grow up to be a better individual. SSFI believes that the greatest take away from art is that it allows children the creative freedom, make mistakes and draw inspiration from things around them.
Not only does art help to develop the right side of the brain, it also cultivates important skills that benefit a child’s development. But art goes far beyond the tangible statistics measured by studies. It can become a pivotal mode of uninhibited self-expression and amazement for a child. Art matters the same way language matters or the way breathing matters! It is a fundamental component of what makes an individual a unique human.
Art may seem like fun and games but SSFI makes children actually learn a lot through exploring art and doing art activities. When children explore art ideas, they are testing possibilities and working through challenges, much like a scientist who experiments and finds solutions. The child tends to gain useful life skills through art.
Art also helps children to learn about culture. To understand, love and respect cultures around the world. Art is an inherited and organic part of every human being, if harnessed well, the development of the child will be much more. The finesse and aesthetics that art gives are one the greatest takeaways from the SSFI art programme.
