Thinking School

Learners are at the heart of everything we do at SSFI. We aim to equip them for future through our thinking school curriculum which brings together the three most important skills namely thinking, social and emotional skills. This is achieved through carefully designed programs which has as its focus

The five tenets of social and emotional learning, self awareness, self regulation, social awareness, people skills and responsible decision making, thinking and inquiry skills.

At SSFI, the Social and Emotional Wellbeing of our learners is of ultimate value. We believe Social and Emotional Learning in tandem with Academics prepares learners for life. They are enabled to have a positive outlook, maintain pleasant interpersonal relationships, understand emotions and exhibit empathy, and make responsible decisions. We believe in making our learners self-aware, which is why huge significance is placed on practicing Mindfulness each day. We believe in providing a happy school for each of our learners.

What kind of thinking is taught at SSFI ?

“I think a school is a place where thinking should be taught.” says Edward de Bono and we couldn’t agree more with him. We sustain our learners in expanding their thinking and venturing into new horizons. A variety of thinking routines and innovative programs are employed to develop their critical, creative, analytical, divergent thinking, and much more. Inhibitions of our learners are systematically fragmented to address and resolve. As we aim to be a Thinking School, making our learners into free-thinking, curious individuals will accomplish the vision

How we do it everyday?

Our day begins with the Curious Curriculum. Mindfulness, reflection for the day, Student-led Circle Time follow one after the other. “There is no separation of mind and emotions; emotions, thinking, and learning are all linked.” — Eric Jensen. As we can’t agree more on the quote, we have implemented all these activities to develop the Social-Emotional skills of our learners. After a robust session of Curious curriculum, we glide into Academics. Co-curricular and Extracurricular activities are all well embedded in our daily schedule. Our learners have access to technological, physical, and mental aids to support their overall development.

Curious Curriculum

“The future belongs to the curious

The ones who are not afraid to try it,

explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out”

At SSFI, the ‘Thinking School’, the Curious Curriculum is the essence of teaching and learning. With emphasis on developing ‘thinking’ skills, our learners explore and imagine beyond boundaries.

Primary

A school where children pluck fresh produce from the soil to fashion their own snack. An environment where young ones experience the joy of farming. We achieve this with our Gardening programme, which is truly integrated with classroom teaching. Practical application of theory is important in our school.

Design Thinking nurtures the learner’s innate curiosity and inculcates problem solving. Students arrive at solutions through ideating, collaborating, thinking critically, and working on prototypes.

This programme follows a multidisciplinary approach and motivates the student to explore one concept from various viewpoints. Learners collaborate,  solve problems, plan, market and monetise through entrepreneurial projects.

At SSFI, thinking is manifested in our makerspace. Equipped with apparatus, learners conduct scientific inquiry, research, build, rebuild and evaluate. The programme provides learners the freedom to explore at their own pace and set their own goals.

Technology and computing is the future. Coding is a necessary skill required for learners to succeed. The programme aims at developing this skill starting from Grade 1.

The Learner gets to know, understand and experience first hand the different professions and the things that really matter. An Advocate, A Chartered Accountant or even A Sailor, they dream and we help them realise that dream. We have established professionals  visit our learners and share their experiences, our learners in turn intern with them and understand what it takes to get to where they are.

Pre Primary

Children are innately inquisitive. The young will touch, smell, taste, tinker and explore the world around them. This is how they learn; by doing. The Curious Curriculum at Pre Primary level provides valuable opportunities to nurture their inherent sense of wonder.

A mixture of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, the BDL is a year round programme.  Children explore real life projects such as toy or candy making. Creativity, problem solving, collaboration and social awareness are fostered through this programme.

Inquiry leads to knowledge. Children explore scientific, environmental and mathematical ideas in this programme.

Caring for plants develops traits such as responsibility, creativity and confidence. Gardening assists learners to grow, learn and evolve. It lends to an understanding of nutrition.

Think Council

We at SSFI provide our learners with a space to enhance their creative and critical thinking skills and bring out their thinking literally. This club has come into existence to encourage our little minds to think and not focus on the solution. Many activities are designed to support them to practice and fall into the groove of the thinking routine.

IDEACTION -a Student-led thinking conference

Human History is, in essence, a history of ideas – H.G Wells. For a better world tomorrow, who can be better flagbearers than our children! To tap their varied potential and explore their different perspectives, SSFI has introduced a one-of-a-kind Student-Led Thinking Conference in Chennai. Learners from across the state will be invited to participate, brainstorm for solutions to current and future World problems.
