Books are something social – a writer speaking to a reader – so I think making the reading of a book the center of a social event, the meeting of a book club, is a brilliant idea, says Yann Martel. This is the thought behind our book clubs for learners as young as age 5. At SSFI, we have the following book clubs for our learners:
The Very Hungry Caterpillars – Grades 1 & 2
The Book Wizards – Grades 3 – 6
A virtual book club exists in the Google Classroom and books from various authors are uploaded periodically. They also meet once in a month and share their reading insights, reflect on their experience, and involve themselves in post-reading activities. To supplement their reading levels, a Epic! Books subscription has been purchased for better collection of books.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
—Margaret Mead
To nurture a young set of committed citizens for tomorrow, SSFI has initiated Ecology clubs for all learners. The grades 1 & 2 learners are ‘The Eco Minions’, while the Grade 3 and above are termed ‘The Green Goblins.’ They meet once in a month, currently virtual, and discuss all major and minor environmental issues they’ve come across in a month, brainstorm and research for possible solutions and share their ideas for further discussions.
Number Ninjas (G1&2), and Number Loungers, (G3 & above) our Math Enthusiasts, are part of the respective Math clubs. “Just because we can’t find a solution it doesn’t mean that there isn’t one.” – Andrew Wiles. At SSFI, we wish for our learners to possess an unrelenting spirit for perseverance. What best way to teach it than Mathematics! We aim for our little mathematicians to be fascinated by the world of numbers.
Our Tiny Debaters (Grades 1&2), and Speech Weavers (Grades 3-6) meet once in a month to debate on various issues, concerns, and challenges they face. Ralph Waldo Emerson says, ‘Speech is power: speech is to persuade to convert to compel.’ At SSFI, we wish for our learners to overcome their inhibitions of public speaking, analysing arguments, weighing different options, and articulating a thought. This club helps in building Interpersonal relationships too.
Providing learners with opportunities to diversify their learning horizon through clubs has enabled our learners to function effectively in real world scenario and learning more relatable. Additionally extracurricular activities like tennis, cricket, throwball, volleyball, chess, yoga, atheletics, Karate, Dance, Music and Martial arts while contributing to overall mind and body development also opens up wider possibilities in terms of higher education and universities.
